Need some creative ideas on how to pop the question? Try a unique holiday proposal, a proposal at a historic landmark, or a proposal at a public place like a ballpark.

Prospective grooms are almost always the ones who are expected to propose, which can come with some serious pressure to be both romantic and creative. The old standbys are generally just fine (over a romantic meal, for example, or during the sunset on a beach). However, some grooms like to add more of an element of surprise by trying a more creative approach.

So what are some more creative, unique ways to propose? Here are a few ideas

Creative Holiday Proposal ideas

Proposing during a holiday isn't a new idea, and the classic holiday options are good ones. The most obvious choices are a New Year's Eve proposal, a Christmas gift or stocking ring discovery, or or any proposal that happens on Valentine's Day. Here are some other less obvious holiday proposal ideas:

  • The Fourth of July (during fireworks, perhaps)
  • Halloween (a ring is a better treat than miniature Snickers bars)
  • Groundhog Day
  • Thanksgiving (with a conversation of things to be thankful for
  • St. Patrick's Day
  • Mother's Day (if the prospective bride is a mother or is pregnant)
  • May Day
  • The first day of spring or summer
  • Graduation
  • Passover (the ring can be hidden like the Afikomen)

Proposals in Meaningful Places for Couples

These kinds of proposals are far from one-size-fits-all. Every couple has their special places that have particularly sentimental meaning to them as a couple. This may be fairly obvious places, like where they met, or where they had their first date, or where they first said I love you. For a more creative touch, grooms might think creatively about other kinds of meaningful places, like a favorite bike or walking path, or a favorite museum display, or a place where a quirky but memorable date happened.

Proposals in Historic Places and Landmarks

Going on vacation, or out to a local landmark? A historic place can make a spectacular backdrop for a romantic proposal. Some of the most obvious choices that might pop to mind are the Eiffel Tower (or anywhere in Paris, really), or Disneyworld (Cinderella's castle is a favorite), or Niagara Falls, or the top of the Empire State Building. Here are a few of countless ideas in this category:

  • The London Eye (or any impressive Ferris wheel)
  • On top of the Space Needle in Seattle
  • On a Hawaiian volcano
  • On a gondola ride in Venice (or a canal boat ride in Amsterdam)
  • In the Grand Canyon
  • At the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco
  • In the French Quarter in New Orleans
  • On top of the CN Tower in Toronto

Public Proposals

Ever go to a ballgame and see a message on the screen like, "Marry me, Kim," followed by the cameras zooming into the couple as Kim discovers her message and her boyfriend proposes (and the stadium erupts with applause)? This kind of public proposal certainly is not for everyone, and requires some planning. Here are just a few similar kinds of ideas:

  • Television or radio on-air proposal
  • Proposal as a part of a conference or workplace speech
  • Ad in a newspaper, magazine, or similar venue
  • Blog proposal
  • Website proposal (something like, "WillYouMarryMeKim.com")
  • Get the mike from a DJ at a party to propose
  • Skywriting
  • Announcement on an airplane

Getting Creative about Proposals

There's nothing wrong with a standard diamond-ring-over-dinner kind of proposal, which will result in a perfectly ecstatic bride-to-be just like any other proposal. However, for grooms who want something a little more unique, use these ideas to start thinking about possible creative options. Whatever happens, the goal is the same: to get her to say yes.
